Oculus Arcade is a collection of classic arcade games playable in Virtual Reality (VR). Built by Oculus Rift (Platform) for Oculus Rift CV1 and Samsung Gear VR, current games include titles from Sega, Midway and Bandai Namco.

Introduction

Oculus Arcade brings a number of classic arcade titles, mainly from the 1980s and 1990s to Virtual Reality. This app will work with existing Gear VR devices and Samsung Gear VR smartphones and will also be compatible with the upcoming version of the Oculus headset.

The users do not need to put virtual quarters to continue playing after a few minutes of free run, each game in the VR arcade has its own price. The full gameplay is something that can be purchased like an in-app purchase and the games cost between $0.99 and $2.99, depending upon the game [1].

Features

The gameplay in the Oculus Arcade starts with the user entering the arcade lobby. The user can stand near the virtual cabinet of his/her choice to select and play a game. Oculus Arcade requires a supported gamepad like the SteelSeries controller for Android, iPega gamepad or Moga Pro to play games on the user’s VR device [2]. The app does not support multiplayer mode at this time but it is very likely that Oculus Arcade will expand to include multiplayer support in the future.

Oculus Arcade utilizes the powerful Unreal® Engine 4 to provide a good gaming experience. The other features of Oculus Arcade are listed below[3]]:

  • MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) powered emulation
  • Arcade customization including music and art
  • Playable SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) with controller and games
  • Streamed Internet Radio with selectable retro stations
  • Works as a virtual emulator front end for SNES, NES, Gameboy, MAME and Genesis

Currently there are 21 retro games to play in Oculus Arcade which are listed below with their parent companies’ names[4].
