Hover Junkers is a made for VR, multiplayer first-person shooter game. This room-scale VR game is made for HTC Vive and cannot be played without a VR headset and motion tracked controllers. Hover Junkers will be available on Steam for $35. It will be available for HTC Vive Pre in February 2016, HTC Vive CV1 in April 2016 and Oculus Rift in Q3/Q4 2016.

Background

The plot of the game is set in post-apocalyptic environment. The gamers have flying or hovering ships which can be used to travel between different various maps and destinations. The ships can be upgraded and equipped with various items which you have access to. The size of the user’s ship is directly dependent upon the size of the user’s room. The bigger the room where the user’s gaming machine or computer is setup, the bigger ship he or she will have.

Features

Hover Junkers is a Virtual Reality, first-person shooter game with additional features such as motion tracked controls and vehicle modification. Users can select a girl, a guy or a robot to represent themselves in the game.

Controls

The game offers a variety of controls which are explained herein. For the “trigger” on SteamVR Controllers, the users have the ability to point, pick, throw, hold and fire different weapons using their hands. The “Trackpad Click” allows the user to give a thumbs up with his or her hand, provides the ability to change items in the other hand, and unlocks of the cylinder of a revolver or the barrel of a shotgun. The “squeeze” on the controller enables one to make a fist, radio push to talk and fire flares. With the “Trigger + Squeeze”, the user can change radio channel, reload bullets and reload shells.

Movement

The movement around the ship is done by walking around in the room physically. Those who prefer to be seated while playing will have a small seated ship. The users who have rooms that are bigger compared to usual ones, will have some boundaries too. If the user gets to the edge of the ship, he or she will hear loud wind which is dominant over all other noises and is an alarm to prevent the user from going any further. If the user ignores the alarm and still proceeds to walk, it will fall off the ship and die. The users can duck behind covers to avoid taking fire. The users can collect loot after defeating other players which can be either be used to attach to their ships to increase their defenses or can be sold to buy new equipment.

Maps

The game features a few maps currently which are Dead Docks, Junk City, Warpgate Ruins, Barge Bay T114, Ultra Swap, Ground-Cloud Canyon, Cargo Crater, Coliseum, Elevator and New Eden [1], [2].

Game Modes

Hover Junkers offers both single player and multiplayer modes. Single player is based upon traveling from one location to another with different scenarios around. The multiplayer allows the users to share the VR experience with other players through private matches or public games.

Future

The developers do not intend to add more weapons in the near future; right now the only weapons are a revolver and shotgun. A flare gun will be added sometime in the future. The release date of Hover Junkers is not announced yet but it may become available at the end of the current year 2016, near the time when HTC Vive will be announced. Players, who have purchased the game on Indiegogo and other sources, can play the game immediately through the Steam early access program. Hover Junkers will be available for Oculus Rift and its motion tracked controller, Oculus Touch, in Q3/Q4 2016.

Crowdfunding

A crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo began in January 2016. The users have options to buy and support the game through packages such as Basic Junker ($35), Deluxe Junker ($55), Junk Hunter ($125), Junk Master ($275), Junk Road Pioneer ($1000), Hover Junker Builder ($3000) and Hover Junk Hero ($8000) [3]. It is evident that the costlier the ‘Junker’ is, the more benefits the users will have in the game.
