Vision processing unit or VPU is a processing unit that is responsible for image recognition. The architecture of VPU is very different from the traditional CPU. Its power consumption when recognizing images and faces is far lower than that of regular CPUs. VPU is designed specifically to handle the numerous simultaneous processes involved in neural networks.
The Myriad 2 MA2450 is a VPU by Movidius. On January 28, 2016, Google announced that they signed a deal with Movidius to put the Myriad 2 in future Google devices. Google has previously used the processors in Project Tango devices.
