Review

The Brookhaven Experiment; when I first heard of the game’s title, my mind for some reason went almost instantly to The Blair Witch Project. Now, while the game may use the survival horror genre to its advantage, The Brookhaven Experiment isn’t a poorly designed version of the Slenderman games with the addition of VR. Oh no, the game is in actual fact a first person shooter, one that makes use of the HTC Vive and VR in general to its benefit.

Gameplay in The Brookhaven Experiment, as previously mentioned is an FPS game, but in the setting of a survival horror game. The way the game works is that it is effectively a horde mode, where waves and waves of enemies will endlessly come screaming towards you; doing what they can to rip you to shreds. With almost any game that uses the horde mode mechanic, you keep playing, with difficulty slowly increasing with every complete wave until you fail to hold them off any longer. It’s a pretty easy system to understand and follow, but that doesn’t exactly mean that the game is all that easy to survive in for too long.

After all, it is a survival horror game, meaning that survival is the key! With each passing round, a new breed of horrifying and terrifying monsters come running up into your face, both to frighten and to murder you! Each new monster that comes cropping up in the game do become more and more frightening, with the reasoning being the fact that they vastly vary in size and shape when a new one comes running towards you. To start off with, you have to stand up against your typical zombie-like monsters, where they are similar height to you as the player and they’ll do their best to come running up at you from all angles to try and catch you off guard. However, the further you get into the game; the more these monsters appear to have developed in fear-factor, because some of them are gigantic and easily fill the entire screen. Just looking at these hulking beasts makes you feel almost hopeless, especially when you’re going up against them with nothing more than a handgun.

VR for the first person shooter genre is already a great experience and that has been established from the vast array of FPS games that have seen great success from making good use of VR. Focusing more-so on The Brookhaven Experiment, the developers have put a lot of time and effort into the gunplay for the game and it shows, because it is incredibly satisfying when you take pot-shots at these monsters and their respective limbs proceed to blow off. Aiming and general accuracy for the game works well, since when you know that you’re aiming at a certain area on an enemies body, when you finally pull the trigger, that’s exactly where the bullet is going to end up on their body and the feeling for it is going to be satisfying; regardless of the amount of times you’ve done it previously.

Aesthetically and atmospherically, the game has a really nice balance of the pair of them. Monsters in the game are designed well and the developers have truly done their best to make them as truly terrifying as they possibly can, and with their varied size and design, I would say that has panned out perfectly. Your location where you’ll be tackling these ever-long hordes of monsters has some pretty incredible atmosphere, due to the fact that you feel almost helpless from the very second you load it up. Your surrounding area feels empty and dark and as previously mentioned; helpless. The only downside to all of this is the fact that some areas don’t look quite as good as others, because the graphical fidelity isn’t quite as high as everywhere else. Creature design does look great, now that isn’t hard to dispute, but there are some areas of the game that aren’t quite as striking or interesting as others.

Overall, The Brookhaven Experiment is a great addition to any VR player’s collection, especially so if they like first person shooters or survival horror games. Not only is the gameplay incredibly fun and satisfying, the atmosphere that the game has you experience throughout is really quite immersive and puts the VR headset to good use. Aesthetically the game looks good, but there are some areas that are a little lacklustre from time-to-time, but overall the game looks good and the graphics keeps the fear and terror to a high degree. Either way you look at it, The Brookhaven Experiment is a great VR game, especially for any players out there who are big fans of the survival horror genre; as you won’t be disappointed.

Description

Something has gone terribly wrong. There aren't many people left these days. The...things that showed up - after the Experiment tore a hole through reality - have seen to that. You're not sure how much time you, or humanity itself, has left. If you have enough bullets, and enough batteries, maybe you can live long enough to fight off the monsters and see tomorrow. If you see enough tomorrows, you just might be able to get back to the event and close off the hole that these monsters keep emerging from.
The Brookhaven Experiment is a Virtual Reality survival shooter for the HTC Vive. Players will have to use the weapons and tools provided to survive ever more terrifying waves of horrific monsters in an attempt to figure out what caused the beginning of the end of the world, and, if they're strong enough, stop it from happening. Keep your head on a swivel, upgrade your equipment, shoot, and if all else fails pistol whip your way through the monster hoards to survive one more day.
