Tabletop Simulator is an interesting name for a game, but I suppose I can let it slide considering that the title is as literal as it can possibly be. The reason for this is the fact that you literally simulate table top board games, from all walks of lives and all across the globe from one central area: the Steam Workshop.

This here game is definitely a one-of-a-kind, which is down to just how much variety you can get out of this one package. Have you ever been online looking for your favourite board game? Be it Chess or backgammon, or some amalgamation of a game no one has ever head of; it can be assured that you will find it in this game. The reason for this is that the Steam Workshop has so much support from the community and that has been reproduced into the game with a vast array of board games for you to download of your own accord, all completely free!

As you can probably assume there’s going to be a lot of hit and miss downloads on the store, but if you can sift through some of the best ones to download your favourite board games and try them out against your friends. Now that right there is some of the greatest fun you can have; not the sifting through, but playing some games with your friends. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing a round of Chess or even Cards against Humanity, you can play them for hours on end in this simulated space. To follow up from this, one of the greatest extras of the game that you can’t do in real life without a painful argument of who’s clearing up the mess is getting the chance to just outright flip a table! But oh no, it’s not just some poorly done animation that would get boring in seconds! Instead, you get the fully-realised physics engine that comes with Tabletop Simulator that allows you to watch all the single pieces and the game board go flying into the air and drop down into the deep, dark ether below.

From a visual perspective the game isn’t anything to write home about, but it certainly gets the job done. The graphics don’t necessarily look bad, but they’re not that special and there’s no real background to speak of, which I suppose is understandable to some degree. What I mean by this is since the game has so many different physics objects that it has a lot to render at times and it can really lag the game after you flip the table and the added background would only increase the lag at certain intervals. A potential fix to this problem would be having an option to turn the background on and off for those users who might need a slight performance boost to deal with the sudden onset of physics.

Similar to other games that have been out on Steam for a while, the developers for Tabletop Simulator have input VR compatibility into their game and it has panned out quite well. First of all, you’re allowed to choose how you want to play in your area; be it room-scale, in a chair or simply at your desk. Secondly, thanks to the use of the HTC Vive you can use the motion controllers to move your game pieces as you see fit and manoeuvre around the game board to get the best perspective or maybe even get a peek at your friend’s cards.

VR in Tabletop Simulator isn’t necessarily required to enjoy it, but it definitely adds an extra element of fun and enjoyment to the game, because flipping that table after your third loss in VR is absolutely hilarious and is an experience that shouldn’t be missed if you can afford it.

Overall, Tabletop Simulator is less of a game as it doesn’t have all that much for you to do inside it originally, but after you download a few board games to enjoy, then that’s when the game well and truly does pick up. Playing with a friend is almost mandatory to enjoy the game to the fullest, but you can find games on the Steam Workshop that are more suited for single-player. Aesthetically the game isn’t that great looking, nor is the VR necessary, but it is a nice addition and side to the game that you might not see otherwise. Simply put, the game is one of those titles that you should have in your Steam library; yet it doesn’t even matter if you’ve got a VR headset for it or not.
