Rock Band VR is a music rhythm game developed by Harmonix for the Oculus Rift (Platform) and Oculus Touch. The game is not a sequel to previous Rock Band game but a standalone game for Virtual Reality (VR).

Introduction

Harmonix is a developer known for their music-based games. The last game developed by the company was Rock Band 4, which was launched for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in October 2015. Rock Band VR is a standalone game coming exclusively to the Oculus Rift HMD. The game was announced during The Game Awards in Los Angeles in December 2015. Rock Band VR is set to be launched in 2016, near the launch date for the Oculus Rift. The price for Rock Band VR is not disclosed at the moment.

Background

A funny video was shown before the announcement of the game during the show. The video showcased Harmonix developers, Palmer Luckey and the the power metal band DragonForce, DragonForce is famous for their song “Through the Fire and Flames”, one of the most difficult songs to play in the series. The song will be playable in Rock Band VR.

Features

Rock Band VR operates from a first-person perspective and the players stand alongside virtual bandmates, facing the audience. Rather than duplicating the Rock Band experience, the game allows the players to interact with worlds that resonate with the beats of licensed songs. Rock Band VR’s user interface looks somewhat similar to other Rock Band games where the color-coded buttons flash on the screen, set to match the players’ button presses. There is no news regarding whether the game will support other instruments such as drums and vocals.

The game experience looks somewhat identical to Guitar Hero Live. The player uses a floating guitar, which is a Rock Band guitar controller. The experience is as expected – the player feels like a real rock star, playing to a crowd with his/her fellow band members [1].

About the Developer

Harmonix was founded in 1995 and is based in Boston, MA. The company has over 100 employees working on interactive music games [2].
