Review

Have you ever wanted your own arcade? One where you can play all of your favourite games without having to spend one million coins, just to finish one, simple arcade game; or, to have an arcade where you never have to wait around for lines of people to disperse before you get to play one round of Street Fighter 2. Well, if either of those sounds like pure heaven to you, then it might be worth checking this title out for yourself.

Right, moving on from the vagueness that is "your own arcade," what can you expect from this here title? Well, other than the fact that it is a literal virtual arcade, you effectively have your own space to play a variety of games; almost to such a degree that is unprecedented. The reason I say that is because you can pick and choose to play on a wide spectrum of emulators that allow you to load up almost any rom that you like.

Whilst the idea of being able to play pretty much any game you like, all via a rom is a great addition; alas the quality of said rom is still down to you as the user to find it. When it comes to finding roms on some of the older consoles it's not exactly hard to find ones of decent quality, but if you're inexperienced at finding them, this game isn't going to help you figure it out and that can impact the amount of enjoyment you have. If you manage to circumnavigate that particular issue, though, you've then got yourself a wealth of games at your disposal.

Roms aren't the only thing you can use at your leisure, as there are also a plethora of extras for you to enjoy. For instance, there's a cinema that allows you to stream a video onto a visual display and enjoy it as you please. Speaking of which, now might be a worthwhile time to mention that this game supports VR; whilst that may not be a big deal when playing older games that don't have that as an option, you get to enjoy the nostalgic experience of feeling like you're a kid again inside your favourite arcade.

Spread throughout the arcade is a couple of mini games, with one of them being 10-pin bowling and the game even allows for network play amongst your friends. From a VR standpoint, though, the virtual reality elements of it all are mostly for nostalgia and the like, because unlike in other VR games, it doesn't add too much to the gameplay, because a lot of the gameplay boils down to play old games on a simulated arcade cabinet. You're not being thrust into a video game like you are with other titles when you use a VR headset, but with this one you're given the chance to enjoy the immersion of the surrounding arcade.

That's the thing with this title, it's not really a game, it is more of a tool/experience. You're going into it for some nostalgic immersion that a good old, classic arcade would make you feel like. If you're going into this one, however in the hopes of finding some brand new arcade games that work flawlessly in VR; you're going to be in for a rude awakening.

The next biggest thing on the list is easily going to be the visuals of the game; something that wouldn’t always be quite as important, but for this game it is an integral part of the whole experience. Your entire environment is set around a 90’s arcade, so you can expect to see bright, neon lights almost everywhere you go and it’s a setting that you’ll quickly come to enjoy, especially if you’re experiencing it in a VR setting, as that is what the game wants you to participate in.

Overall, New Retro Arcade: Neon is a great experience if you’re using the VR elements of it; hell, even without VR it’s still pretty fun, but it’s much more enjoyable with a VR headset. The addition of allowing the user to add whichever roms they like to their own, personal arcade is what really makes the game shine, as do the aesthetics that take you back to your favourite arcade as a kid. It’s a shame that there isn’t too much in the way of original games for you to play throughout it, but if you’re looking for a VR game you can sit back and relax on for a couple of hours and let your troubles vanish for a little while, then this game is for you.
