Review

Let’s get this out of the way first and foremost; this game is a first person shooter, designed for the HTC Vive, and while the industry has been treated to a myriad of FPS games as of late, Dig 4 Destruction has taken the genre and added one small change to make it that little bit more enjoyable and interesting for the players.

The change that has been implemented is a focus on destructible environments and digging for weapons to battle against your opponents. You see, you don’t start off with any weapons, you simply have to start digging your way into the ground to locate one; otherwise you will be stuck flailing your fists around in the hopes that they block bullets somehow! At the start of the game, everyone is on a very even playing field, since no one has yet to acquire any weapons; but as soon as that timer starts and you get to digging, the tables will soon turn, depending on who finds the best weapon for the right situation.

As I’m sure you can imagine, with destructible elements being tied to the game as a whole, you get the chance to blow up and destroy someone else’s cover. If you’re feeling a little mean you could blow up your friends cover, and watch them struggle in the next fire-fight, of which is absolutely hilarious. But, if you’re feeling a little nicer to your friends, you can instead blow up the enemies’ cover and take advantage of the fact that they are now sitting ducks.

When it comes to the controls in Dig 4 Destruction, they aren’t necessarily bad, but they don’t exactly feel all that refined in comparison to your regular, everyday shooter. Even after a few hours into the game, you still get this sense that the controls aren’t quite to the level that you would expect. At times they just feel a little janky and clunky, something that can make enjoying an FPS game quite difficult after a little while.

From an aesthetics standpoint, everything looks fun and inviting, with the exception of the environments themselves, as they only seem to resemble that of blocks and it isn’t all that interesting to look at; especially after a while. Where the game makes up for this, however is in both the character models and the weapons themselves. Characters all resemble a cute animal, one that appears to be lacking any feet and it makes watching them flail their arms around in a panic when you’ve just shot them all the more hilarious. Each and every weapon plays a little bit different from the last, so regardless of whether you are using a hand grenade or a revolver, you’re going to be enjoying yourself, knowing that the next weapon you pick up isn’t going to be anything like the last.

It has to be said, while the game can be played against some AI opponents, the real meat of the game is when you play against some actual people, because the interaction you will be getting with them make it more than worth it. The only downside to this is that it is pretty darn difficult to find a multiplayer game while playing online, which is a true shame because of how fun and enjoyable of an experience it is. While it is fun to play against the AI from time to time, it would be nice if I could actually find a match when I go online, as it’s a little disheartening knowing that my chances of finding a game are highly unlikely.

Overall, Dig 4 Destruction has a very different approach from your typical FPS game, something that I certainly appreciate. The aesthetics of it all aren’t too bad at all, but the environments definitely don’t look that nice and considering that they are little more than blocks, it’s not that interesting to look at. Even though trying to find a multiplayer game in this one can be incredibly challenging from time to time; the overall experience I’ve had with Dig 4 Destruction is one that I am pleased to have had.
