Daydream is Google's mobile Virtual Reality Platform. Built on top of Android Nougat, Daydream encompasses both software along with hardware such as Daydream-ready smartphones, HMDs and controllers. Unveiled in Google I/O 2016, Daydream is Google VR's high-end mobile VR platform while Cardboard is the low-end.

Devices

The Daydream View consists of a Slide-on HMD that requires a Daydream-ready phone. Daydream-ready phones are new Android Nougat smartphones with special components such as special sensors and displays. These phones act the the processors and displays for the HMD. Daydream View differs from Cardboard as it only works with specific phones, not all phones.

Accessories

Daydream Controller - a small remote with a touchpad, 2 buttons, volume button and rotational tracking.

Daydream Ready Phones

Smartphones act as the displays and processors for the Daydream HMDs. Unlike Google Cardboard, only Daydream-ready Android phones , not all phones can used for Daydream HMD. These phones have special sensors and screens needed for a quality VR experience. Google has partnered with Samsung, LG, HTC, Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE, Asus, and Alcatel to bring these phones to market.

App Requirements

To be in Daydream Home, Daydream's portal, an app has to meet 13 requirements:

  1. Performance - the app has to maintain 60 FPS during play sessions on a Daydream-ready phone.
  2. Never go to 2D - use the app without having to remove the phone from the viewer. App does not fall back to 2D. Avoid triggering 2D permission dialog boxes in VR.
  3. App stays in landscape mode - app has to stay in landscape mode when rotated.
  4. Use immersive full screen mode - don't show system bars.
  5. Users can focus on elements - avoid placing objects so close to the user that they can't focus on them, and they get double vision. <.5m will start to be problematic.
  6. App maintains head tracking - app continues to update the display based on motion, even during a scene load (or fade to a solid color).
  7. Stable horizon line - if the app has a visible horizon line, it must remain stable.
  8. Users initiate movement - moving the camera should be initiated by user intent.
  9. Honestly represent content - descriptions and screenshots should accurately represent the nature of the app's content.
  10. App uses Daydream Controller
  11. App has a VR icon
  12. App has a 360 photosphere screenshot - used in VR version of Google Play store.
