BigScreen from BigScreen, Inc. is a Virtual Reality Desktop App that allows users to host virtual reality LAN parties or use their entire Windows desktop inside VR with friends.[1] It comes with the ability to display content anywhere users see fit and represents an important step toward turning VR into an integral part of our daily life.[2]

Features

The main idea behind BigScreen is to let users livestream their monitor to friends in an online environment, thus gaining the ability to host a virtual LAN party or movie night. People in the virtual space can mirror their monitors to friends, or use the application solo as a virtual desktop solution.[3]

The application is developed by Developer Hayden Lee, co-creator of one of the earliest social VR spaces Convrge. BigScreen CEO Darshan Shankar is a Y Combinator alum who says he’s been working on the project since 2014 and rolled it out as a private beta in July 2015.[4] Developers said that their goal "is to build Skype, not Chatroulette."[5]

With BigScreen, users can play their favorite games on a massive screen inside a virtual reality environment, or watch any content that would normally be displayed on a regular desktop screen, such as Twitch, Netflix, YouTube, and even VLC. It's then possible to choose and customize the virtual screen and make it small as 30 inches or as large as an IMAX-size screen. The virtual environment itself can be anything from a luxury apartment to outer space.[6]

Multiple users can gather together and enjoy a shared experience in private or public rooms with support for up to 4 players. The application features a low-latency positional audio chat functionality and encrypted screen sharing. Future versions should add shared desktop audio, customizable avatars, Vive controller support, more environments, and better performance.[7]

System Requirements

MINIMUM:

  • OS: Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10
  • Processor: Intel i5-4590
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 800 MB available space
  • Additional Notes: Windows 7 is not supported

Setup Instructions

The software is designed to be used with either the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. To install it, go to its Steam page and follow the instructions.
