Review

Arizona Sunshine is a surprising VR title that I don’t believe anyone truly knew where in the world it came from, but on the day of release it appears that even the surprise and sudden nature of the release didn’t hold Arizona Sunshine from its true purpose of being one great VR shooter.

What you can expect from Arizona Sunshine is what you’d typically see out of a FPS game; one completely filled to the brim with zombies. The thing that sets it apart from most shooters is the level of detail that’s implemented in the gameplay, along with the gunplay which is where the game truly finds a way to shine. One of the biggest details is the guns, due to the fact that the developers made it one of their main focuses and you can really feel that from the very first time you pull the trigger whilst aiming at a shambling zombie. On the addition to this, it’s not just the feel of the weapons, but the way they look upon being fired. When you get a chance to fire that gun for the first time, especially in the case of a pistol, you get to see the kickback and watch the barrel get cocked; and it’s so incredibly satisfying to witness – let alone having it as one small addition of blowing off a zombie’s head!

From a story perspective, the game isn’t all that impressive, which is partly down to how short the main campaign is, with the rest of it being down to how uninteresting it is for the most part. The thing is, though, the story isn’t all that important in the slightest, because the gameplay is well and truly the reason for this game to be considered an easy recommendation for any VR fan.

Looking at the game from an aesthetic standpoint, despite a couple of little niggles here and there; the graphical fidelity of the game is pretty darn outstanding. A lot of the game is bright and vibrant, regardless of whether you’re in the middle of the dessert or exploring around a deep, dark cavern. Even with the zombie motif being the focus for the game, it doesn’t exactly go for the horror element of the zombie spectrum, which is something I appreciate. It allows for the player to focus solely on the gameplay, rather than a tense atmosphere that distracts from what the developers were going for.

You’re given the advantage of 25 different weapons for you to use against the zombie hordes, all of which have been designed to be as close to the real thing as possible. This means that the game gives you the freedom to experience these weapons in their real world form; but instead give you the chance to test them out on a couple of shambling corpses that are practically begging to have a few extra holes pumped into them.

Overall, Arizona Sunshine has a couple of small issues that detract very little from the game as a whole, but the controls, the gameplay, and the aesthetic easily makes up for any and all foibles the game has. The bright colours and the incredibly satisfying gunplay is what makes the game shine and the fact the game is built entirely for VR, all the way from the ground up shows just how successful the developers have been with Arizona Sunshine.

Guide

There’s a lot of things that can go wrong in the zombie apocalypse, but thankfully in Arizona Sunshine we only need a few tips and tricks; instead of an entire guide on how to avoid being consumed by a walking cadaver in real life.

First and foremost, the biggest one that I feel compelled to recommend is how you use your ammo; and with that I mean whenever you reload your weapon, it completely ejects the clip/magazine and renders whatever bullets were inside it moot and gone forever. So, the first important tip is whenever you’re about to reload, be aware of just how much ammo you have left in that one clip, because if you’ve barely expunged a couple of bullets, hitting the reload button won’t be a smart move. After all, ammo isn’t exactly the easiest thing to find in a zombie apocalypse, so be sure to be as sparing with it as you can.

Moving on from that should be one of the most obvious tips around in regards to zombies, and that’s to aim for the head. In popular culture and video games, almost all zombies die to a good shot to the head; so for the sake of both conserving ammo and ending the “life” of the corpse coming towards you, it’s a bloody good idea to go straight for the head!

At times, you won’t have all the free time in the world to get the chance to look high and or low for new resources to come about and make your life that little bit easier. On the odd occasion, you might find some ammo in one of the many abandoned cars that you’re almost bound to find lying around. Unfortunately, though, it can take a considerable amount of time to open a car door and when a zombie is nibbling at your feet, you don’t get much of a chance to open the car door and route around. Instead, you can simply shoot out the window of the car, reach in and grab whatever ammo is lying about on the floor. It does require you to waste a bullet, but if you’re in a particular rush and need to quickly get yourself a refill of bullets, it’s a fast and somewhat efficient way of doing so.

For the most part, these are the majority of the tips that you’ll need to help survive the zombie-infested wasteland! Most of it boils down to aim for the head and conserve your ammo; but if you’re aiming for the head anyway, then conserving ammo becomes a happy accident!
