Windows is an operating system developed by Microsoft that supports a number of VR headsets and runtimes, including the original Oculus Rift DK1, DK2, CV1, Rift S, HTC Vive, Valve Index, SteamVR, and others.

Headsets in windows either use extended mode or direct mode. Extended mode treats the headset like just another screen. But direct mode is a special mode in the driver that keeps the headset hidden from the window compositor and keeps it directly accessible by a VR runtime like SteamVR.
