Review

VR The Diner Duo gives you the chance to follow your dreams and become a diner cook, who for some reason exclusively makes only burgers that have a wide amount of variation; yet still they are only ever burgers!

Diner Duo places you as the chef in a bustling diner, one that seemingly gets more and more difficult with every completed level that you’ve finished. There is very little movement required for you as the chef, as all of your ingredients and utensils are within a 180° space around you for you to pick up and make to order. A lot of the gameplay boils down to you looking up from your little kitchen, seeing what your customers would like for their order, and making it exactly as they tell you. Depending on how many burgers they would like, you’ll need to turn to your left, put a few on the stove top and wait for them to cook, place them on a bun, followed by the correct condiments and toppings and then finish off by serving it to your customers.

As time goes on, it quickly gets more and more difficult, since the burgers get a lot more over-indulgent and complicated as each level passes by; not to mention the slowly increasing line of customers that’s permanently on the back of your mind as you’re slaving away. Other than that, there isn’t too much to the gameplay, but you can add some real flair to your gameplay whilst you’re playing by flipping your ingredients and burgers around, similar to the bottle flip trick. You can take the plate, flip it around 5 times in a row before serving it to the customer and it is easily one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done in VR/games in general.

Aesthetically the game has a very easy on the eyes approach to its design and for the most part looks pretty simple, which in comparison to some other games in the VR library isn’t quite to the same level; but for Diner Duo it works and I can’t imagine it with any other style.

As should come as no surprise, with a name like Diner Duo, it does imply an element of cooperative play, but instead of having you both play a chef who must cook for the oncoming hordes of customers, one of you gets to be the waiter or waitress. The way it works is in local co-op, the one on VR does the cooking, and the one waiting tables will be on keyboard and mouse, going around, collecting orders, and reporting back to the chef on what needs to be made to order. It may sound a little disappointing to be the one on keyboard and mouse, but the cooperation element that you have with you and your friend, along with the chaos of it all quickly makes for a hilarious time. Besides, if someone gets bored of one role, you can always switch the controls around and see who the best out of the duo is!

Quite possibly the biggest detriment to the game at the moment is going to be the fact that the multiplayer is only local co-op. Not everyone can play local co-op, due to spacing reasons or their location, so it makes trying to set up a few games of this a lot more restrictive than just being able to open up a lobby and make a start.

Overall, VR The Diner Duo unfortunately only has local multiplayer, which is its only real detriment in the grand scheme of things. Although, if you do manage to get a friend around to play a few levels of Diner Duo, then the colourful and simple graphics will be sure to get you both laughing and spending a darn good afternoon flipping and serving burgers.
